Our Woman of the Year

"Our work to heal a broken world isn’t easy, it isn’t always clear. But the cathedral builders’ concerns about finishing an unbelievable undertaking did not diminish their faith; in fact it enhanced it. And when we feel stuck, remember that we are not alone on our journeys. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before, hold the hands of the talented women and men who walk with us, and clear a path for those who come next."
- Eric Dawson

Venice Business News

Venice on Vine Pizza:

Open Monday- Saturday 10:30-8:30 p.m., Venice offers pizzas, hoagies, soup and salad. Our outdoor dining area is up (thanks Joe!) A group of elementary students from Turpin visited recently and wrote us notes, telling us our "Meatball hoagie was the bomb!" and that we have "nice ice cubes." (there were pictures.)

Venice Catering:
Extremely busy in April, we hope to taper off a little bit in May, before we get into rethinking some of our prices. We've varied from large formal events (for 300 in one case) to dances and meetings. One day last week we made 600 sandwiches in 3 hours!

VeniceZine!

It's all in our April VeniceZine!

Venice on Vine constantly strives to foster a sense of community. Part of that community includes the chance for self expression and storytelling. There's a world of wonder in our new new "VeniceZine" including a story by Ivy, poetry by Julie, our children's coloring page and partner profile about St. Vincent de Paul. Thanks to Editor Catherine.

News and Updates

John Blanks has moved from a trainee position to join our staff as assistant restaurant manager, supporting Chef Berenice Torres in keeping the restaurant running.

Eeemah, Ivy, Myia, Crystol, Durrell, Sean and former trainees Chiquita and Bridgette joined staff, board and many friends of Sr. Judy Tensing at the Enquirer Women of the Year award at the Hyatt hotel. We were so proud to be there. Sr. Judy had the most guests ever, with about 150 people out of the 900 guests. We thank Mary Donaldson of the Enquirer for making us welcome, and several donors who made it possible for staff and trainees to attend.

Please welcome new trainees in March and April, Angela, Marcie, Jessica, Leroy and Durrell. Two of our new trainees have already attained housing, moving into their own apartments shortly after joining the program.

Michael, Chef Berenice and Board member Lucy are working on starting a Venice Co-Ed softball team, the PIPperonis. Michael has extensive coaching experience, and many of us are looking forward to this a positive nonwork experience. We need a few more players and a team sponsor, so contact me if you want to play or pay.

Excerpt from a customer letter: "DiShawn coordinated our luncheons when I brought groups of elementary students to Venice on Vine. ... His organization was so thorough and considerate...he talked and engaged the students....Shawn is the kind of employee I would readily hire, and a man I would recommend. He made our entire experience a pleasure." B. Haas SW Local Schools.

Venice participated in Dining out for Life- a fundraiser for Caracole; we donated just under $100 from proceeds to support services to people with HIV/AIDs.

We are getting ready to plant our garden. The bulbs Johnathan planted last year have flowered, and Sheila planted seedlings in a tiny greenhouse that are now ready to go outside.

Our Alumni club held a kareoke night in April, welcoming back several graduates along with former Chef Flo, who is back on her feet.
